About Badrinath Temple

Badrinath temple is one of the most sacred place for the people of Hindu religion, it is situated in the Badrinath town in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state. Badrinath Dham is the only temple in the world which comes into both Char dham and the Chota Char Dham / Char dham of Uttarakhand.

It is also a very important part of the panch Badri yatra in Uttarakhand. Temple of Badrinath is situated in between Nar and Narayan mountain ranges. The beautiful Alakananda river flowing in front of the Badrinath Dham and the Neelkanth peak in the background raises the beauty of this sacred temple.

Badrinath Dham is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. The main attraction of this temple in Uttarakhand is one meter tall black stone idol of Lord Badrinarayan.

History about Badrinath Temple

Some Vedic scripture claims without a doubt that the Badrinath shrine was a Buddhist Shrine till the 8th century but in the 9th century Adi Shankara converted it into Hindu Temple. And some legends said that the idol of Lord Vishnu or Badrinath was found by the Adi Shankara in the Alakananda river, which he preserved in a cave. With the help of the king named Kanak Pal, Adi Shankara expelled Buddhists from there and then they established the Badrinath Temple at Chamoli. Later, King Kanak Pal’s devisee managed and expand the temple premises when needed.

In the 16th century, the King of Garhwal shifted the idol of Lord Vishnu in Padmasan Mudra from the cave to the Badrinath temple. From that time the idol was worshipped at the temple.

The area of Badrinath temples comes under British rule when Garhwal districts are divided, but the king of Garhwal decided to continued to handle the management of the temple. In the 17th century, the temple expanded by the kings of Garhwal district. In 1803 there is a major earthquake, then the temple was rebuilt by the king of Jaipur. The renovation task completed until the first world war.

Legends About Badrinath Temple

Legends in Vishnu Purana tell that there were two sons of Dharma named Nar & Narayan who selected the place of Badrinath to spread the wellness of Hindu religion amongst the Himalayan region and used to do dhayan at this place. For the sake of looking for the perfect place for hermitage, Nar & Narayan discover four Badris from a section of Pancha Badri which are known as Yog Badri, Bridha Badri. Dhyan Badri and Bhavish Badri. Finally, they decided to settle in the hot and cold spring at Alakananda River. They named the place as Badri Vishal. After that Nar and Narayan are converted into the mountain which now stands there behind the temple of Badrinath Ji.

Badrinath is the place where Pandavas ascended to heaven through Mana Village. It is also known as the last village of India and has a cave where Rishi Vyasa wrote the story of Mahabharata.

Badrinath Temple Opening & Closing Dates

The opening date is decided by the priests or pujaris of the temple every year on the eve of Basant Panchmi, which is the festival for Hindu religion peoples. The temple of Badrinath is open after 6 months in April / May every year and closed in November for 6 months every year. The closing date are fixed on Vijayadashami every year.

Badrinath Temple Opening and Closing Timings

Badrinath Dham Temple is open early in the morning at 04:30 am every day and closed in the afternoon at 1 pm. After a break, the temple again opens once from 4 pm to 9 pm. Devotees can visit temple between 4:30 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 9 pm.

Badri Kedar Festival : This festival is celebrated in the month of June. Badri Kedar is celebrated at Badrinath and also in Kedarnath. In the Badri Kedar festival, all the artists invited across India so they showcase their talent or art.

Janamashtmi : Janamashtmi is an Indian festival which is celebrated in the whole of India. It is a Hindu religious festival, Hindu people celebrate Janamashtmi every year on the occasion of the birth of Hindu Lord Krishna. Janmashtami is celebrated in Badrinath, devotees gather and celebrate this festival.

Mata Murti Mela : Mata murti is the mother of Hindu Lord Badrinath. In this festival, pilgrims sing holy songs and worship Maa Murti. Mata Murti Mela festival is celebrated in Bhavan Dwadashi.

Best Time to Visit Badrinath Dham

Badrinath Dham is opened only for 6 months in a year and it remains closed for 6 months because of the climatic condition. Summer is the best time to visit Badrinath it remains cool in the summer season also due to the high altitude location.

There is heavy snowfall in the winter season which is the main reason for closing the temple in winters. The best time to visit Badrinath Mandir is May- November.

If you want to visit in a hassle-free and quite journey September-October is the perfect time to visit. May & June are the peak season many pilgrims come to Badrinath on these two months.

So According to us the Best Time to Visit the Temple of Badrinath is April/ May to June and September to October / November.

Summer : It is the best time for pilgrimages to visit this sacred place because the climate of this sacred Hindu place is moderate in summers.

Monsoon : From July to September it gets difficult to travel to Badrinath Dham because of the monsoon there are many landside problems on the route of Badrinath. So we don’t recommend you to travel to the monsoon.

Winters : From November to April there is very cold weather in Badrinath due to this climate the temple closed by the government every year for 6 months from November to April. So there is no chance to travel from November to April.

How to Reach Badrinath Temple

Badrinath is one of the holiest temple in Uttarakhand, India. It is the only temple which comes under both Char Dhams. 4 Dham that include Rameshwaram, Dwaraka, Jagannath Puri and Badrinath and Chota Char Dham which includes Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Tourist can reach Badrinath through following ways.

By Road : You can easily reach Badrinath because it is well connected by motorable roads. You can get a bus from Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Delhi. Regular buses are available for Badrinath or you can travel by your own vehicle.

By Air : There is no airport in Badrinath, the nearest airport for Badrinath is Jolly Grant Aiport which is located in Dehradun at a distance of 317 km from Badrinath. From here you can hire a taxi or travel by bus or you can travel in your own car to Badrinath.

By Train : There is no railway station in Badrinath, the nearest railway stations for Badrinath are Rishikesh (297km), Haridwar (324 km) and Kotdwar (327km) from Badrinath. From here many taxis and bus services are easily available or you can travel in your own car to Badrinath.
